Columbus - State Rep. Jeff Smith's 2000 silver Lexus LS400, valued at $41,500, was stolen from his home and recovered the next day in Memphis. Smith said he received a call from a man who said two men were trying to sell him the car. Smith called police, who arrested two suspects.

Raymond - A Justice Department report claiming a pattern of physical abuse at Mississippi's two juvenile training schools may have been politically motivated, a state legislator said. Rep. George Flaggs said its release appeared timed to hurt Gov. Musgrove, a Democrat seeking re-election.

Jackson - State university leaders say they will again ask the Legislature to allow their schools to waive out-of-state fees for students in adjoining states. The proposal previously died in committee. Supporters say it could boost enrollment. Critics fear that it will create a drain on state funds.
Monday, July 21
Meridian - Several hundred people gathered for the funeral of the sixth victim of a fellow factory worker's shooting rampage. DeLois Bailey died last week of her wounds. Lockheed Martin employee Doug Williams killed five co-workers on July 8 and ended his own life that day. Two other victims remain hospitalized.
Friday, July 18
Hattiesburg - John Pojman, a University of Southern Mississippi chemistry professor, will perform experiments on how fluids mix in weightlessness, using items already available aboard the International Space Station. Pojman will test how fluids interact without the interference of gravity. The Columbia shuttle disaster left NASA without a means of carrying new items to the space station for experiments. The test will be performed in September by astronauts using syringes and Zip-lock bags.
